"Boat - check, Money - check, Reality - check..."

My wife and I recently began seriously considering cruising as a way to depart from the 9-5 working world, before we were too old to enjoy it. In addition to doing a lot of sailing since these societally mutinous thoughts have entered our heads, we've read a lot of books on cruising.
If you want a comprehensive reference book on all things sailing, get The Annapolis Book of Seamanship. If you want drama and a lesson in the harshest of realities, read The Perfect Storm and pray you can avoid that kind of experience at all costs.
The Cruising Life is a practical, tasteful overview of how to start cruising, and my opinion is that this appears to be a reasonable approach to the pursuit of happiness in warmer (or colder) climes on a sailboat. Sometimes I wanted a lot more information than I got here, but that wasn't the point...
The author offers frank, balanced treatment of all topics - and admits his opinions are his. For example, he offers a great account of what passes for a bluewater capable cruising boat (smaller may be better than larger, and older, well-used boats are best).
My thanks to Mr. Trefethan for fanning the flames of our cruising ambitions.

This book was about how to become a "minimilist". (In other words, get rid of all your material stuff, your ideas of "status", start to live simply, start exercising, and start saving, saving, saving!!) By building your "kitty", you're able to buy your boat with cash. It, too, was about practical stuff and a much simpler life! The only regret I had was that it didn't have any pictures! Other than no pictures-I loved it!

I wish I bought it before I bought my boat

This is the book you should read before you buy a boat, before you make up your mind to go sailing, before you take that job and shove it.
I like Jim's book a lot. It is opinionated - good, I was looking for opinions. He does favour the old woodies but that is because he has a lot of experience with them. My boat is "plastic" and I'm sure he wouldn't fire torpedoes at me if I were to offer cocktails.
It is good about the philosphy of why you should go, or stay, and good with how to stash the necessary loot. I find most of these books biased towards the reasonably established crowd - 40-ish. Most of the books don't consider the cut-price option of shoe-horning yourself into a small, sturdy boat and roughing it a little. You don't need $100k+ to do this. It all depends on how much luxury you are prepared to sacrifice for your cause.
Like most would-be cruisers, I thought owning the boat is the most important part of cruising. Wrong, wrong ... at least I like my boat but has sunk more money than it should have.
I went cruising ... with about US$15k (give or take) of floating equity . We had a few problems in the 2 months or so we managed to sail for but it was all a hoot (except getting the engine out). The last problem put us ashore for the next year or so but it is entirely unrelated to cruising so we can't begrudge the boat for that one. We will be back.

A general textbook for clinical neurology

This 1600pp-book is a clinically-oriented approach to the major syndromes and diseases of the nervous system. Neurologic examination is not covered. Its overall quality is one the highest. The authors of the 6th edition have placed considerable attention to diseases that traditionally interested child neurologists (developmental neurology, inherited metabolic diseases). The chapters on neurodegeneration and demyelinating diseases are very well written. Cerebrovascular disease is covered in 100 pp. The chapter on peripheral neuropathies does not contain a clinical algorithm for reaching diagnosis in the patient with a neuropathic syndrome - something that almost all neurology textbooks lack. Not particular emphasis has been placed to clinical details of therapy. The practicing neurologist will have to consult another source for that. Chapters are very well balanced, and many cross-references are provided. The authors have also done a good job with the bibliography, providing references to key papers with more detail on each subject dealt.

Essential for neurology board exam

I have been studying for board exam for past couple years and have chance to review this book recently. From first chapter to the last page, you'll find basic principles of general neurology as well as pediatric neurology in well-designed systematic pattern. Clinical approach to signs and symptomatology makes this textbook essential for clinicians. New treatment and diagnostic approach at each chapter also make it a "must" for neurology residents, studying for the board exam. Principles of Neurology is the way how to understand fundemantal of neurology.

This text is not easy to read, but it packs a lot of information. You can almost guarantee that this book will provide useful info on any neurological disease. It is one of the best reference books for general neurology. I also find its end-chapter references to be fairly complete. One criticism is that it does not offer too many tables or illustrations.

Learn more about programming languages

I do a lot of programming of microprocessors and work a lot with Linux writing scripts. I have also done some web programming. My education in computer science is limited. I bought this book so I could learn more about programming languages, how compilers work, etc.. On a college website, I saw it being used as a textbook. The 1st 5 chapters are pretty good, but after there are chapters like "Object Oriented Programming", "Event Programming" which I already know. I'm keeping it. It may help fill in some gaps in those areas. However, I don't consider this a strong book on programming languages.

Excellent for Beginners and Professionals Alike

As part of a mentoring program, I was once asked to coach and supervise someone who was about to give his first major presentation in front of his peers and key decision makers. He dismissed all the advice that he was given and said, rather breezily, that he had a strong background in amateur dramatics, so he knew exactly how to deliver a speech. The outcome was predictable but still sad. He knew all about how to project his voice and how to achieve rapport and get a quick laugh, but that was about it.

People who know nothing about professional speaking assume that it's easy. When somebody once asked me my fee for a speech, I saw the eyebrows shoot upwards: "For an hour's work????" I was asked.

"No," I responded, "For thousands of hours of research, preparation and practice." Any professional speaker would say the same. It is no different from a professional musician, dancer or comedian.

If Alan Weiss's book had been available back then, I would have asked my mentoree to read it.

It is precise, specific and also lays out the big picture. So often books like this are full of self-congratulation, but this one really does deliver.

No book in the world will do everything for you. But if you really do want to be a speaker and you have something to say which will enrich your audience: read this book; take action on its contents; contact other professionals in your area, or organizations like the National Speaker's Association and then take massive action to get started!

Best information on 'speaking career strategy' I have read

First of all, the production quality of this book is crap. The thing was falling apart the first time I opened it. I dont like having to be careful with a book like this, particularly one I want to mark up, highlight, go back to time and time again.

Now then, we are getting to the point of the book in the first place. I wouldn't care if this thing was in cuneiform pressed into wet clay tablets. There is more practical and useful information in this book on how to strategically set up your speaking career than I have seen in any of the dozen or so other books that I have read. You could literally take the advice in this book - and virtually nothing else - and plan out your speaking career for the next ten years.

The author's practical trashing on some of the 'rules of thumb' of the game (e.g., raising fees) are not mere opinions: this guy has lived this and has the income history to back up his claims.

Some of the references are outdated (the book is nearly 10 years old as of my writing) so you have to get passed that. The info on how to establish yourself as an expert through writing books and creating other income streams through developing info products is sound but has been superseded by far more complete and recent writings (Stephanie Chandler's book "From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur" is a great reference for that).

The exercises on 2 PAGES (35 and 46) alone made reading this worthwhile.

The focus on offering value is the key. This is what I focus on in my own coaching and speaking and, for that matter, what I spend a lot of time teaching to my clients.

Breaks the old rules

If you have read "Speak and Grow Rich" or similar books, then you will very much enjoy this refreshing take on the speaking industry. The author breaks down all of the old speaking industry myths and affirms that anyone can make it in the speaking business. Old industry axioms such as "raise your fees when demand exceeds supply" and "specialize in a few areas of speaking" are blasted by the author's advice to raise fees when the value you offer to the customer increases, and to offer clients as many services as you are comfortable providing (e.g. wide range of topics as well as delivery formats (keynotes, training, etc.)).

This book is VERY customer-centric; that is, the author looks at speaking/training/workshops as a catalyst for evoking change (e.g. improved communication, increased sales) and believes they should produce tangible results that last long after the speaker has left the client site. This is far different from the tone of other books which seem to indicate that speaking is an ego-centric medium and that platform skills are more important than value delivered.

In short, the author speaks volumes on delivering real, measurable value, in both speaking, writing (articles, books, etc.) and any products you develop and sell. He furvently denounces egomaniacal motivations and condones making the absolute best effort to provide buyer/client satisfaction.

Other topics the author touches on: business insurance, incorporating your business, speaker's bureaus (why they need you, not the other way around), and marketing strategies (this is lightly touched upon).

Be forewarned that the author writes about catering to business clients rather than to individual consumers, so you will not find information regarding developing and marketing consumer centric seminars (although he does touch (very) briefly on the college and private seminar market). If this is what you are looking for, may I recommend a book by Robert W. Bly or by Paul Karasik.

This is a wonderful book that will likely leave you with a "it's not as hard as the other books said" feeling. My recommendation is that you read "Speak and Grow Rich" by the Walters duo first (it's got excellent information about every aspect of the business, despite its shameless self-promotion) then go on to reading Weiss' superb work.

About the Author
Professor Paul A. Samuelson, founder of the renowned MIT graduate department of economics, was trained at the University of Chicago and Harvard. His many scientific writings brought him world fame at a young age, and in 1970 he was the first American to receive a Nobel Prize in economics. One of those rare scientists who can communicate with the lay public, Professor Samuelson wrote an economics column for Newsweek for many years. He testifies often before Congress, serves as academic consultant to the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Treasury, and various private, nonprofit organizations, and was economic advisor to American presidents including John F. Still the best introduction to the principles of economics

Samuelson's Economics is simply the best book available for any individual attempting to obtain an understanding of basic economics.Chapter 2 of the first edition lays out the foundation for an understanding of the different schools of macroeconomics by examining the micro foundation of macroeconomics-the production possibilities frontier(PPF) model.In this path breaking book,Samuelson called the PPF by its other name,the transformation curve.Chapter 11 then ties the student's knowledge of the PPF directly to the problem of insufficient(or too much)investment spending over time.Samuelson ,like Keynes,identifies the intertemporal problem of optimal investment expenditure as THE fundamental problem of all capitalist economies.The extreme volatility and unpredictability of aggregate investment expenditure over the business cycle IS the cause of involuntary unemployment.Samuelson then carefully explains the paradox of thrift in relation to where on the PPF the macroeconomy is operating.If the economy is operating on the boundary of the PPF then the microeconomic optimality conditions of the marginalist calculus,based on the rationality principle of classical and neoclassical economic theory,will reflect resource scarcity.A negative relationship will exist between consumption goods expenditure and investment goods expenditure.Such a smooth tradeoff over time can only mean that investment is NOT volatile and/or unpredictable over time.Private sector investment is as stable and predictable as private consumption spending over time in classical and neoclassical theory .CLASSICAL and NEOCLASSICAL economics is the study of economies operating,with minor inventory flucuations over time,primarily on the boundary of the PPF.This is a special theory that is contained in the Keynesian(neokeynesian)general theory that includes the usual case of the private sector operating IN THE INTERIOR of the PPF.In the interior of the PPF,the optimality conditions of neoclassical economics break down and fail to hold.IN THE INTERIOR the relationship between consumption goods and investment goods is positive,not negative.More savings does not lead to more investment but to less investment as businessmen cut back on the use of their capital stock in the face of decreasing current sales(and decreasing future expected sales)and rising inventories of unsold stocks of goods.This leads to further declines in the capacity utilization rate of the capital stock.The economy moves deeper into the interior of the PPF.More and more individuals are involuntarily laid off.The fall in incomes then negatively impacts consumption goods spending .A cumulative negative downward spiral,deeper and deeper into the interior of the PPF,LEADS TO MORE AND MORE UNEMPLOYMENT.This view of the business cycle is the opposite of the neoclassical view that the problem is naturally self correcting as business inventories adjust over time.It emphasizes the unadjustability of a fixed capital stock. Samuelson's solution,like Keynes's,is for the public sector to provide an offset to decreasing levels of private investment spending by increased public infrastructure spending.The multiplier process will then lead to increasing incomes ,creating expectations of future profits for businessmen.Private investment will increase,moving the economy back to a position on the boundary of the PPF.Neoclassical economics would then be operational.In summary,no other principles book(or intermediate or graduate level textbook)has ever said it better than Samuelson.Master this book and you will know economics.

The original edition is much better than the one I studied.

I was amazed to discover how good the original edition of Samuelson's classic economics text is. Virtually everything in it is just as relevant today as it was in 1948. Of special interest to me was chapter 10, Personal Finance and Social Security, for the light it sheds on the current debate about retirement income security. I think Samuelson ECONOMICS 1 ed. would be my textbook of choice for a course in introductory economics.

The only enjoyable economics text I have ever found

This colorfully written book is the only enjoyable economics textbook I have ever come across. Some things in the book may be out of date, so I am reading this in parallel with the current edition of this text (edition 19e, co-authored by William D. Nordhaus), which is up-to-date but not as incisively written. For example, both editions carefully describe the many advantages and occasional disadvantages of a market economy. A sentence on this topic from the first edition reads: "John D. Rockefeller's dog may receive the milk that a poor child needs to avoid rickets." The current edition reads: "A rich man's cat may drink the milk that a poor boy needs to remain healthy."
