Every structural engineer should have a copy.

A very usefull reference book for the practising structural or mechanical engineer. However it could be significantly improved by some modernisation and rationalisation ie: removing references out-dated information and references from the 1920's and 1930's,etc. Also by standardising variables and equations, eg: the variable for the width of a section may be 'b' in one chapter 'd' in another, also 'tw' may represent flange thickness rather than web thickness, etc. The book examples are all in U.S. (lbs, feet) units, annoying the European (N, m) user, and may start on one page, then be interupted by 20 pages of tables before continuing on. So the general layout could do with being significantly improved.

R&Y's publication, which I became aware of in 1986 is stillan amazing collection of engineering formulas in statics, stability,dynamics and thermal calculations. The IFE uses ANSYS FEA technologyesp. for complex geometries and nonlinear issues: but once in a whilewe appreciate R&Y's work to retain contact to quantities and forthe insight (wrt dimensioning) which interaction with formulas cangive.
R&Y's text sections give much insight, the section onstrenght of materials terminology can be useful (learn - refresh) aswell as the brief immersion into experimental issues.

the problems in the back of the sections need improvement

i have taught calculus 1 and calculus 2 a number of times using smith/minton. the math department previously used stewart's book, but switched to smith/minton to give it a chance, especially since the included math zone software seemed interesting. however, after three years, the math department switched back to stewart.

my students often complained about the numerical emphasis in smith/minton. it's different from what you'd see in other textbooks, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. it's a matter of taste. the disconnect comes when students are doing homework problems and must rely on pen and paper rather than a computer. at that point, the stronger numerical and technology emphasis in smith/minton was seen as a disadvantage by many of my students. in fairness to the authors, i should also state that i don't allow calculators on exams, which probably enhances this negative perception in my students' minds.

in truth, no calculus textbook will fit everyone's needs. some instructors will like epsilon-delta proofs, some will like the use of the hyperreals from nonstandard analysis, some will like the non-rigorous intuitive approach, and some will like a greater role to be played by our ever evolving technology. the individual instructor should rightfully fill in the gaps based on his/her knowledge of the subject matter, making the best of the situation, because of the very fact that no one calculus textbook can be perfect. in the case of smith/minton, the instructor should be prepared to stress algebraic skills and symbolic manipulations a bit more to complement the text, especially given some of the harder exercises. (a poor algebraic foundation is, in my opinion, the main reason students fail calculus.)

now, the primary reason the math department dropped smith/minton as the required textbook is the homework problem selection. no matter how good or bad the exposition in a textbook is, the textbook can work so long as the problems and exercises are sound. this was the only real serious weakness to smith/minton. the problems in the back of the sections are mostly too easy or too hard. there was not enough problems to form a middle ground. students were able to do the easy ones, but then felt unprepared when they struggled with the hard ones. students have told me the jump was just too great and i agree. the problem selection in the optimization section was particularly bad. increasing the number of problems in the back of the sections with more intermediate level exercises would fix this deficit in a future edition. (this review is for the third edition.)

one innovative feature that came with the purchase of smith/minton was the math zone software, an online source of problems. it's nice to see such things tried, but what i didn't like was that the math zone software sets up template answers. for example, part of the answers are given, and students fill in the blanks. there were also multiple choice problems. i feel that this gives students too much of a prompt. ideally, the students should not be given any form or part of the answer at all since ultimately students need to sit down and come up with the method of attack on their own while staring at a wholly empty space where their answers would go, i.e. what would happen on an exam. there were also technical problems with online access, but that was probably because the program was in its infancy and those technical issues have hopefully been resolved by now. i personally dropped math zone use in my classes altogether after trying it for one semester.

all in all, smith/minton is not a bad textbook as far as the explanations go. the textbook i used in my college days was far worse than smith/minton where the exposition is concerned. however, looking back, i realize that my professors chose that particular textbook because of its amazing problem selection: there were a ton of problems of varying difficulty for each section in the textbook. this weakness in smith/minton proved to be its main deficiency as a textbook for the three semester calculus sequence, the quality of the exposition notwithstanding.

Rigorous and well written. A joy to read mostly...

I just completed a 3-sequence course using this book *and* I read the entire thing, so I can say for a fact it is one of the more rigorous texts out there, with almost no theorems going unproven (the few that are clearly state that it requires techniques from advanced calculus), and the proofs are easy enough to follow (meaning well presented) that it peaked my interest in taking more advanced classes. All formulas are clearly derived so that you can "own" them, i.e. memorize if you want, but you understood how it was derived, you own it, so it can be on your reference sheet. The only thing I would knock the author for, and hopefully they fix in the 4th edition, is to get rid of ALL the "why is that?" and "think about that!"... without ever actually saying what the right way to think about such things are (he is trying to get you to think beyond the material I'm sure, but since they never say why or what the answer is, we don't know if we are). If it is an important point, then say it; otherwise, drop it. Same goes for points you felt are important enough to bring up in the main body of the text, but then you say "and that is left as an exercise". But those comments aside, it was really an excellent text. I compared some of the chapters to the old Thomas & Finney book I have, and the Smith & Minton book is superior in its presentation of the material.

Well it's cheaper now, so that's not bad

It did it's job throughout college, not a bad textbook.

I had to buy it while it was much more expensive than the current price years back, and it was stolen. Twice. Speaks volumes about the cost of education these days.

I've been thinking about reviewing my calculus for writing physics engines, but I'll probably skip buying the same textbook three times and use google.

"My soul must be very black, indeed," observes King, virtuoso of horror fiction, but these 30-odd interviews do not lay bare his soul. They do, however, reveal some interesting things about his insomnia and persistent fears (he hates darkness), his literary sources, work habits (he writes two hours a day, seven days a week) and how his scary novels are linked to his childhood insecurities and feelings of inadequacy. The interviews, conducted by various journalists over the past decade, originally ran in media ranging from Penthouse to the Baltimore Sun. Shrugging off critics who dismiss his work as derivative, King explains his fascination with the horrific and calls himself a good writer, not a great one. His comments on his novels and their movie adaptations are often astute, as when he interprets Carrie as a parable of women's consciousness or pans Stanley Kubrick's frigid direction of The Shining.

So Good I Bought The TP, TC, & Limited Numbered Copies

In this collection of essays, both new Stephen King fans, and SK'ers alike can enjoy a unique, indepth and personal view into the mind of the world's greatest horror writer. In Bare Bones King does just that -- he Bares his Bones, showing us the reader what really goes on inside his head. You are taken down into a dark cavern that few men have traveled into and survived. (Well, at least literarily -- not literally). As stated above, I was so impressed and intrigued by these works that I bought all three copies available: the 1st edition paperback, the first edition hardcover, and number 588 of 1152 limited handnumbered copies. Truly a "missing link" in any King collection. If nothing else, Bare Bones is a "must-read".

For King-Fans a must

This is maybe the most interesting book about Stephen King available. If you want to know something about him, you have to read it, because you won't learn more anywhere else. Not even in his own 'On Writing' by the way.
Maybe it would be interesting too to read more actual interviews, but these one help a lot. Okay, it's not always that interesting, like in the conversation about his radio station and sometimes weird, like in the one about 'Maximum Overdrive' if you have seen it. And of course a lot of things are repeated.
But it's really a must for King-fans.

With a book like this you have to be ready to resign yourself to the fact that you're going to get a lot of repetitive material but at least it's never told the same way twice. Essentially what you see is what you get - quite possibly one of the most extensive collections of interviews with King ever collected and published in one place. The book is filled with fun stories about the writing process, his thoughts on other writers and movie makers, first hand accounts of skullduggery in the publishing world, and in light of Joe Hill's recent success - some rather amusing stories about his son's childhood.

If nothing else you should read this book so that you can find yourself with a near inexhaustible supply of anecdotes to tell at parties. After all how many people do you know can open a conversation with "Oh that reminds me about this time I read about Stephen King finding a full set of human teeth . . ."?

Good book, a must have for general pediatric practitioners.

This book has helped me quite a bit during the short time I have had it. I like that I can quickly look up full color pictures of the rash/illness that I'm trying to diagnose and then bring this picture in to show to mother/father and explain diagnosis/treatment/etc. The pictures are quite large and clear, which is nice as some of the books that I have ordered you can hardly see what the pictures are showing. I did deduct 1 star as the descriptions underneath the photos are quite sparse (and sometimes rambling), more information (even if brief) regarding testing/treatment would be nice. Generally, you can look up pictures but then will need to use another source if you want more information (I understand that this is an Atlas, however). However, I would recommend this to any practitioner who works with pediatric patients.

I reccomend this book to all the paediatricians,dermatologists and all those who are related to medical profession.

Not happy with purchase

The seller advertised the standard version of the book I ordered but then mailed the international version to me, and the seller did not offer any money back when I emailed about my dissatisfaction with the wrong item. It was false advertising, and I have had to make some accommodations for the book to work for the course I am taking. I received it too close to the start date of my course, so I couldn't look for a new one and return the wrong version in time. The seller also didn't disclose that he/she would be shipping it to the U.S. from another country, so I spent too much money on shipping and didn't even receive what I ordered. The book was in new condition, so I appreciate that, and that is the only reason I give two stars.

Lilly takes you by the hand tells you how to do it right.

This dynamite book is for every speaker; The beginner and the pro. Easy to read, easy to digest and follow tips for organization and delivery; she boils things down to the bottom line, the important takeaways from her own experience and the experiences of others. I began taking notes the minute I began to read. I wrote down things like: Make love to your audience. Stay green and growing for each new audience. Make fear your slave not your master. Turn every presentation over to the Lord. Watch our for ad libbing under stress. Approach each audience with an attitude of generous love. Replace fearful self worries with audience benefits. What do you want your listeners to do differently after they hear you? Tell yourself, "Today I get to do what I love to do." Now I take Lilly Walters wisdom with me every time I speak. It goes before me, stays with me helping and guiding me all along the way. Every time I am hit with 'dry mouth' before a speech, I think of Lilly and her lemon story. She showed me how to develop my own three important takeaways. Comments from my last presentation included words like 'she captivated her audience,' 'left them spellbound,' ''her message of help and hope was heard loud and clear' etc. Thanks Lilly. Within a half-hour of starting to read it, for example, I completely reorganized an upcoming presentation- - replacing a rather cumbersome 8-step process with an easily remembered 3-step process. Secrets is a fast read because each of the author's points are supported by comments from between five and ten other speakers. This conversational point/counterpoint construction emphasizes important points and adds a great deal of personality to the book. The more time you spend with this book, reading it and filling in the worksheets provided, the more comfortable you'll be with your upcoming presentation.

The Best Book on Public Speaking

Psychological studies show that the average person fears public speaking more than death. Well, this book can quickly help overcome that very negative and unfortunate reaction.
The author is the head of a major speaking bureau, so she knows what works and what doesn't. Otherwise, she wouldn't have any business. To improve on her perspective, she also interviewed 60 of the top paid speakers in the country and liberally quoted them in the text to this book. These quotes and examples are fascinating.
She assumes that you are not a famous paid speaker now, so builds her points as simply and clearly as possible -- as a top speaker would.
The book has one chapter that is worth 10 times the cost of the book -- how to overcome hostile audiences and problems that occur. I have never seen so many witty lines and fun things to do in an otherwise stressful situation! Mastering the material in this chapter would be enough to turn anyone into a confident speaker.
Ms. Walters uses the analogy of planting, nurturing and caring for a tree to explain her concepts of public speaking. That makes everything much more tangible and familiar.
At the end, she summarizes the most important points into four areas -- just in case you missed the punch line along the way.
I especially liked the way she used counterexamples to make her point. She describes and quotes Stew Leonard, Jr. who often does just the opposite of what the book suggests. But he is successful because he is authentic, cares for his audience, and is sincere.
Although I know a lot of public speakers, do paid public speaking myself, and read a lot about public speaking, I found that more than half of the material in this book was new to me. And it all made good common sense. So I'm converted!
Learn to enjoy speaking to others and to better serve them in grasping things you care about that will help them. It can be very rewarding personally and financially for them and you!
