Good for engineers

It is said Tymoshenko is among the first who introduced mechanics to the states. I gave it five stars because of its historical importance.I have this book on shelf, due to it large influence but, to be frank, seldom referred to it. This book, like all other Tymoshenko's books, was written in a pure engieering fashion. If you are looking at these solved problems, like twisting of a prismatic bars, this is the book for you. It involves many classical technique for solving boundary value problmes. However, if you are more theoretically orientated, there are much better presentations outside, from the moderate mathematical Fung's book, to the highly mathematical Green's book. It is my opinion that the beautiful theoretical parts of elasticity are absent in Tymoshenko.

This is an all time classic..

A classic text and a good buy for a whole career. It covers everything. I know it is quite an old book but it is still the best one around about elasticity. I was using this book in my university years when I was doing a General Engineering course however, I still find it very useful. This book is a must-have for all engineers.

This book is one of the best I have come across....the complete guide for HVAC engineers. I have many HVAC books, but this is the top of the tops...well illustrated formulae, diagramatic illustrations, plus controls schedules...discussed issues and common scenarios pertaining to design. Well done Shan Wang

Oh no! no imperial units

I have been reading through this book and I am struck by three things. The first is the very great completeness of this text. It's very helpful if you are already quite familiar with HVAC and need a chapter to bring you up to speed on a new aspect of your field. The second is that the author really needed an editor to help with flow of the language. The book can get a little awkwardly worded at times. The last is unfortunately my greatest quibble and that is that for some totally unknown reason, the author has chosen to use antiquated imperial/standard units all over the text. SI units are often given in parentheses, which helps but adds to the clutter, but the psychrometric charts and gas properties are listed in exclusively imperial units in the appendix. This makes the appendices largely useless to me as I really don't plan on converting absolutely everything. I very much hope that for the third edition, the author will fix this problem.

Writer-rigger Brion Toss became obsessed with knots in the late 1960s, a preoccupation that led him to sailing and rigging. He has rigged everything from tiny daysailers to huge square-riggers. Equally at home with modern or traditional rigging, Toss continues to pursue the challenge of designing The Ideal Rig--that unique combination of details best suited to a particular boat and its particular crew. When not writing or lecturing about knots and rigging, he can be found at work at Brion Toss Rigging, his shop in Port Townsend, Washington.

Robert Shetterly lives and works in Brooksville, Maine. He got hooked on drawing at Harvard University and later taught in a one-room schoolhouse, dug clams, and worked in a fish factory to support his habit. In 1980, he left an art editor position at Farmstead Magazine to become a full-time freelance illustrator. He has illustrated many books, and he continues to create what he calls his own "peculiar drawings."

Far more than I had expected. I thought I was purchasing a book on rigging sailboats - it's that and more. Decorative knotwork, easy to follow instructions, cordage, even magic! A great handbook!!!

About the Author
Daryl Siedentop graduated from Hope College in 1960 where he then stayed for ten years coaching basketball and baseball and teaching physical education. During that time he completed a master’s degree from Western Michigan University and a doctorate in physical education from Indiana University. In 1970 he accepted a position in the School of HPER at The Ohio State University where he eventually became a Professor, Senior Associate Dean and then Interim Dean of the College of Education. In 2001, he retired and assumed initial leadership of OSU’s new P-12 Project, a university-wide outreach initiative to support urban school improvement in Ohio. Siedentop has held Visiting Professor positions as the University of Massachusetts, University of Georgia, Instituto Nacional d’Education Fisica in Granada, Spain, and Edith Cowan University in Australia. Siedentop has published 12 books several of which have been translated into Japanese, Korean, French, and Spanish. His newest book “The Complete Guide to Sport Education” will be published in 2004. Siedentop has published 6 edited monographs and 80 refereed articles in JOPER, Quest, JTPE, and the European Physical Education review among other outlets. His honors included the Visiting Scholar Award from Virginia Polytechnic University, election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Education, The International Olympic Committee President’s Prize, NASPE C&I Academy Honor Award, AAHPERD Alliance Scholar Award, Research Consortium McCloy Award, and the OSU Obertueffer Award. Siedentop has Distinguished Alumni Awards from Hope College and the Indiana University School of HPER.

My first approach to Human Resources

I am studying Bussiness Administration at the Universidad de los Andes, Santiago Chile. The thing I liked the most about this book is it's great amount of examples aplicable to all scenarios, including our Latinamerican environment, and the chapters' content, follows a practical and logic sequence. I strongly suggest that the author should publish an addendum to be sold separately, with his best advice on the solution for the problems-cases proposed at the end of each chapter. It is amazing how important is the human resource, professionally managed, for modern and successful organizations, even in Latinamerica, where due to low foreign and local investment and high unemployment there is a surplus of qualified professionals.

My wife needed a Spanish translation of this, so she was initially disappointed when this came. However, I found there some material missing from the Spanish-Latin American version - and, as it turns out, something she needed. Plus, the seller was courteous and agreeable to work with.

Perfect for someone who never even knew what UNIX was

Having been using the UNIX system for six years, I'm still referencing from this absolute beginner book from time to time because the language is so non-technical, yet the information contained within is more than enough to get you started on using UNIX operating system and learn to love it.
The author did a very good job particularly in describing and tutoring the reader how to do common tasks such as using email systems, doing text editing, issuing commands from the CLI, etc. Not very in-depth but the point is, it is enough to get you interested to look for MORE, which is the most important thing. There is no point in explaining something in-depth only to discourage the reader to look for more information, and only to leave the subject untouched because it looks "hard". If you are a UNIX veteran/advanced user/system administrator, this book is not for you, as you have probably known way more than what this book contains.
I highly recommend this book as the very first book on UNIX to read on, if you have never even heard of UNIX before, and only experienced in Windows/MacOS environments.

Ideal book for getting started

I found this book to be excellent. I feel it teaches you all that you need to be a comfortable UNIX user. This may not be the ideal book if you are looking for a quick reference for commands etc. Great job by the author.

Detailed, understandable, thorough and fun!

I think this must be one of the best UNIX-manuals ever written. Mr. Hahn shows skills and knows how to teach even a beginner everything from basics to the more advanced. I would highly recommend this book to everybody who would like to learn a bit or eight about Unix- The most interesting and powerful MUOS there is!

About the Author
Ralph Turek holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the University of Cincinnati College -- Conservatory of Music. He has held teaching posts at George Mason University, the University of Maryland, and The University of Akron, where he is Professor of Music Composition and Coordinator of Graduate Studies. He is the author of The Elements of Music: Concepts and Applications and of Analytical Anthology of Music, both published by McGraw-Hill.

In Theory for Today's Musician, the author brings to bear insights and pedagogy acquired over a long career of teaching music theory, analysis, and composition informed by a background in jazz and arranging; as well as other experience that includes program annotation and fiction writing. The result is a textbook unique in style, tone, and relevance to today’s practicing musician and music educator.

The Elements of Music: Concepts and Applications

This is an excellent book for gaining a good fundamental knowledge of music theory. I picked the book up at a university bookstore where it is used in a formal music department instructional setting. However, the mature, disciplined musician who can set aside study time to work through this book for self instruction will enjoy it and greatly improve their musical ability. In particular, I found the selection of musical examples useful, enjoyable and fun. Overall a great book.

Complete and concise, but not for beginners.

I bought this book for a class called "Fundamental of Western Music," in which I learned theory of music from scratch. The book had a very nice format--list of terms at the first page of each chapter, introduction to each new concept with couples of illustration, and a lot of exercises at the end. However, the content seemed too concise to me--as a beginner who just started to learn music theory, I NEEDED a lot of examples and clarifications. What would be common mistakes that beginners usually did? What techniques should we learn so we could memorize the key signatures quickly? Such questions were not addressed in the book. The book was designed to be concise, so it mentioned a new concept JUST briefly, then it moved on in no time. The exercises did not help much too since there were only solutions to the few. In the end, I was not sure why I bought the book.

I know that music is a matter of practice and practice, but with good techniques or interesting observations about music theory would foster a much faster and better music learning to me. So my suggestion is that the book is okay for those who already knows music stuff and needs to recap quickly on some concept. But for beginners, there should be a better book out there for you.

Understandable & Comprehensive

I picked up guitar about 3 year ago and wanted to understand music theory. This book started simple, used lots of examples and built to an advanced level. I have a solid grasp of musical concepts that used to mystify me. I've really enjoyed it and look forward to studying volume II!
