Pilar Wayne was John Wayne's third wife and legal widow (they were separated at the time of his death in 1979). Her biography of her husband for 25 years traces Wayne's first marriage to the saintly Josephine, second marrige to spitfire Chata, three-year affair with Marlene Dietrich, and his fight against cancer; and gives colorful gossip about Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, and Geraldine Page. Co-author Thorleifson keeps Wayne's film career firmly in perspective, and Pilar is more edifying than exploitive, as one might have suspected at first. This is a good antidote to the so-far uninteresting literature on one of the screen's legends. Christopher Schemering, formerly with Arlington Cty. P.L., Va.

This is an interesting read. It is John Wayne's story told from the perspective of Pilar Wayne, his third and last wife. Being the wife of John Wayne was anything but easy, and Pilar explains the complexities of being the wife of a movie star, and yet, being the woman and mother of the family. Pilar was not content to being just the adoring wife of a movie star, she wanted her own individuality and freedom to be who she wanted to be. She blossomed in the age of women's lib and equality, and it definitely put a strain on their marriage. Their age difference, and the limitations caused by Wayne's cancer also contributed to their mutual discontent. They ultimately separated but never divorced.
There is nothing real profound here, but she has a story to tell and does it well. There are better books about John Wayne and his life, but this fills in details that only a spouse could tell.

A great man and a great book

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to remember and learn more about a great star from the days when movie stars were bigger than life. His third and last wife Pilar shows us what kind of a man he was. I am glad she wrote this book.
This is not a salacious tell-all but it is nevertheless very interesting. They were together for almost 30 years and separated for several years before he died. I found it ultimately very sad, especially one scene in a restaurant when the two of them should have been allowed to talk privately but were interrupted by fans seeking autographs in what sounded like an unending line. I will definitely read this again.

This book gives you a real insight into the sort of life an actor OR actress (as the case may be) lives (in tinsel town) and how fame and fortune can change them & their Family lifes in a very fickled industry, very informative and I would recommend this book to any of the Dukes die hard fans out there.
