About the Author
Guadalupe Valdes is a Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and Professor of Education at Stanford University. She works in the areas of Socio-linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and has published numerous articles in one of her concentrations, the teaching of Spanish to both monolingual speakers of English and bilingual Hispanics. Professor Valdes is the author of four Spanish-language textbooks, two of which focus on teaching Spanish to bilingual Hispanics. She served as a member of the editorial boards of several journals, including Modern Language Journal, Bilingual Review, and Hispanic Journal of the Behavioral Sciences. Trisha Dvorak is Senior Program Manager with Educational Outreach at the University of Washington. She has coordinated elementary language programs in Spanish and taught courses in Spanish language and foreign language methodology. Professor Dvorak received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She has published books and articles on aspects of foreign language learning and teaching and is co-author of Composicion: Proceso y sintesis, a writing text for third year college students. Thomasina Pagan Hannum is a retired Spanish teacher. She currently works as a Consultant on Language Testing with the Bilingual Unit of the State Education Department of New Mexico, and frequently presents workshops on writing in the language classroom. She received her MATS from the University of New Mexico and has completed considerable additional study in spanish Linguistics. She is co-author of Como se escribe, a text for Spanish-English bilingual students at the secondary level, a contributing writer for Paso a paso, a Spanish-language series for secondary students, and co-author of Un paso mas, a workbook for bilingual students to accompany Paso a paso.

On the contrary...not boring!

Contrary to one of the other reviewers of this book, I do NOT find it boring at all. This book is designed for students who have upper-level ability (junior or senior college level). If one does not understand the majority of vocabulary in this book, then he/she is not at that level, despite his/her actual class level standing. Ideally, this book is to improve your STYLE of writing and your ability to write effectively, whether you are asked to write a composition (descriptive, persuasive, etc), or a term paper. It is not designed to improve grammar or vocabulary (although it could, depending on the amount of effort put forth). The groundwork for good grammar should have already been laid, although grammar and vocabulary are an ongoing learning process and no one is expected to be perfect at either. My suggestion would be to review textbooks used in lower level classes to improve grammar. And, a good dictionary, used religiously, is indispensable for effective acquistion of vocabulary.
That reviewer, however, makes a very good comment. Learning how to write also requires frequent practice, and for THIS this book is excellent. It gives good information on how to generate ideas and organize them. It examines, in detail, the various types of writings in order to give the student the tools he/she needs for accomplishing these types of assignments when asked to. And, it gives many exercises useful in practicing the information learned.
If read carefully, this book provides very effective information, which will enable to student to improve the form and style of his/her writing.

This is THE text of Modern European History

It is difficult to add to what reviewers have already provided. I used this text when I was a classroom AP teacher for a number of reasons. Among those reasons was that while most K-12 textbooks are the product of a committee, (committee- a terrestrial life form having at least six legs and no brain.) this book is largely the work of the late Dr. Robert Roswell Palmer. It was written as if the author felt that the history of Modern Europe was not a collection of chapters but rather a story, a narrative to be read the way one reads a novel. There is a continuity to the writing and an elegance of prose that can only be achieved by a text like this. Dr. Palmer was a wonderful historian and a marvellously accessable teacher who took the time to answer letters personally on his old manual typewriter. His passing is lamented.

An invaluable resource, A remarkable book

A History of the Modern World is an informative, all-encompassing compendium on European history. I was able to attain a 5 on the AP European History exam independent of teaching instruction and based on this book alone. And yet, even if I hadn't reaped an academic reward from this book, the experience of reading it carries a reward in of itself, for I genuinely feel as though this book changed my perspective on society. As the narrative of European history progresses, from the Renaissance to recent European events, Palmer's eloquent and informative prose allowed me to interpret patterns in social structure, politics, and economics that, I feel, give me a greater perspective on modern society. In that sense, A History of the Modern World is a book that holds great gratification for serious and committed readers- in or outside the classroom.

Comprehensive, compulsive, fun, & enjoyable

I bought this book because for a while now I have been reading up on world history. Also, many of the customer reviews for the book seemed extremely positive. I can now say that this book was as good as the reviews and as good or better than any other such books that I have read.

When considering single (or, in this case, double) volumes that cover such a massive topic area, two complaints commonly crop up. The first is usually that such a work is too dense or impenetrable for casual history-enthusiasts. Normally, I argue that this can only be expected; but in this case I think I can say that the book shouldn't be too much of a problem for most people, even if they are fairly new to reading up on history. Also, with some focus on the lighter (or more cultured) aspects of history - such as the development of European art, etc - I found there to be plenty of breathing space between paragraphs that were perhaps more challenging.

The second complaint usually has it that one or two volumes surely cannot boast of being a 'history of the WHOLE world'. Again, I normally counter this by saying that of course this cannot be expected either. Naturally, the full history of the whole world cannot be condensed into merely a few thousand pages. However, in the case of "A History of the 'Modern' World", this argument is almost redundant. The book does not promise to review every culture and history that has been; it promises to consider the 'modern world' and discuss where that came from. i.e., if a culture no longer exists and had little effect on the world, then it is not really for the book to consider. Put another way, the emphasis is on the cultures and civilisations of yesterday and how they all came together and influenced each other to form the cultures and civilisations of today. Given that the thesis of this book is therefore more specific than is often assumed, I felt that everything was covered exceptionally well.

So, in brief, this book is neither too dense or too brief. Further, I found it to be a highly compulsive read that kept me turning the pages at home, on the bus, on the train, and at various breaks during my working day. The material was fascinating and fairly well balanced and I believe that it put reasonably fair emphasis on most of the cultures of the world relative to their size and influence, etc. I also found it to compliment nicely all other books I've read on the subject, and its maps and graphs did a lot to help me process the information and gain a good understanding. Most importantly, though, is that it was just plain fun and enjoyable. I recommend this book very highly.

Basil, the adorable mouse detective!

"The Mystery of the Missing Twins could never have been solved by an ordinary detective."
(...that is the first sentence of the cutest mouse book ever...)

Basil is a mouse with a nose for solving problems, just like his hero, Sherlock Holmes. In this story, Basil and his comrade, "Dr. Dawson", are presented with The Mystery of the Missing Twins---a quaint storyline that all little children will love---and adults will too. The author, Eve Titus, so clearly depicts the true Holmes through Basil's demeanor, thinking patterns, and mindset. A story just can't get any better than a mouse who learned his skill of deducting by listening at the very feet of Sherlock Holmes!

Along with Basil and Dr. Dawson, there is also their "mousekeeper" who's name is "Mrs. Judson". They live in a mouse village called---well, the village name is so cute and Holmes related, but I'll let you find out the name for yourself.

This is a book I wish I would have known about years ago, so that it could have been a childhood favorite growing up. At least I have found it now. The lovely story and the delightful illustrations of this vintage book create something to cherish. If you feel silly reading the book by yourself, then just grab a youngster and read it to them. Besides, you never know what little ones you may be able to start on the trail of Mr. Holmes himself.

Basil of Baker Street is the most adorable detective story... I mean, what other detective could console a distressed mother whose children are lost, by saying: "I can offer you only crumbs of comfort." {Yes, just what a mouse should say!}

The book was first published in 1958 and has gone through many editions since then. If you like old vintage books, with charming illustrations, I'm pretty sure you'd like this one.

The Author: Eve Titus was an American children's author, born in 1922. She wrote at least twenty books in her lifetime---five of which are about Basil, the mouse.

Useful for Business and Techie Folks Alike

Just read this book as part of an IT Policy course. Although this edition does not come with the cases, we downloaded cases from Harvard Business School directly.

The three authors are very well known, McFarlan having developed much of the theory in use in the field of IT policy management. The material is readily consumable, and it contains enough explanation of the technical jargon to satisfy even the most Luddite reader.

I found that the book did a very good job of outlining concerns in today's IT field: outsourcing, project management, security, and IT portfolio managment, as well as key business theory like Porter's five forces and McFarlan's strategic grid.

If you need to know about the theory of IT strategic management, this book is for you. If you need real-world examples, I recommend buying the hardcover version that includes the cases.

The only reason I do not award this book five stars is because the layout of the book is very 80s; the font is small and the overall look and feel is very dated.

This book is to the point and easy to read. It's small, but packed with useful information. Unlike the later editions which focus on IT structure and management, this edition is more project management, organizational behavioral focused.

This book was billed as the "paper back edition." This book is the 6th edition and the text is now in its 8th edition. There actually IS an 8th edition in paperback.
