Inspired treatment of sophomore level E&M written by a Nobel laureate

Edward Purcell won the 1952 Nobel Prize in physics for his work in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, suggesting, at the very least, that the author has a sophisticated understanding of magnetism. Personally, I have always found magnetism to be one of the most difficult topics in physics--and probably the most difficult in classical physics. As Purcell explicitly points out, however, the complexities of magnetism can be traced to the fact that magnetism is not a classical phenomenon at all, but a consequence of Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity applied to moving charges. This is a natural development, because (as Purcell indicates) Einstein's famous 1905 paper was entitled "On the electrodynamics of moving charges".
In addition to Purcell's lucid treatment of magnetism, his intuitive development of the concepts of divergence and curl guides the reader past the temptation of viewing these entities as little more than the abstract products of differential operators. Purcell uses a series of figures, illustrating 6 different vector fields, as heuristic examples that impart to the reader a more practical understanding of divergence and curl.
When I first studied E&M as a college sophomore 40 years, in a course established explicitly for physics majors, our assigned textbook was actually Kip's Fundamentals of Electricity and Magnetism. I can say that Kip was easier to read and provided all that I needed to solve the homework and exam problems, and is probably a more suitable first E&M textbook. It is also helpful that Kip uses MKS units (e.g. Volts for potential difference) rather than the much less familiar CGS units (e.g. statvolts). Nevertheless, Purcell was a joy to read alongside Kip, and provided part of the inspiration that carried me through those difficult years of increasingly dense undergraduate and graduate physics and engineering courses.
