Explains how to do procedures in interventional radiology

This textbook consists of ten chapters dealing with interventional radiology procedures, and although it is heavily weighted to cardiovascular procedures, significant attention is also directed to the nonvascular interventional procedures. Chapter one is an introduction to catheterization techniques and includes some very basic principles. Chapter two is a detailed analysis of the techniques and materials presently being used for embolization. Chapter three is a comprehensive review of the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal bleeding by interventional procedures. Chapter four is a detailed analysis of the clinical application of embolization in the thorax, abdominal organs, and the central nervous system. Chapter five is dedicated to Interventional radiology in the biliary tract. Chapter six is a technical review of angioplasty procedures and the clinical applications for angioplasty. Chapter seven is a review of percutaneous methods for retrieval of foreing bodies in the circulatory system. Chapter eight discusses in detail the applications of interventional radiology in the urinary tract including percutaneous lithotripsy. Chapter nine details pulmonary thromboembolic disease as well as the inferior vena cava filter application. Chapter ten evaluates the percutaneous methods in the treatment of abscesses. This is a book with enphasis on what is the problem, what are the solutions and how to do it, giving the less experienced interventionalist a road map to follow for most of the procedures.

About the Author
Warren C. Young is professor emeritus in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he was on the faculty for over 40 years. Well Thought Out Upgrade from Previous Editions

I have three editions of this book: the classic 4th edition, the useless 5th edition and this, the 7th edition.

The 4th edition has simple format, is easy to use, but lacks methods for more sophisticated hand analyses and is sparse on explanations. The 5th is best used for a doorstop.

This edition is an excellent combination of the usefullness of the 4th edition with modern and more advanced methods.

The layout of each section has excellent explanatory material and provides the simple 4th edition type equations backed with more involved/advanced formulas which are very useful.

My hat is off to the authors. This is probably the best reference for those nasty stress and deflection hand calculations we all have to do from time to time.

Five Stars With no Doubt.

During my years as Structural Calculyst this book was always on my right side on my desk, and when I needed it, it was ready to help me find my way. One really very good Engineer has never found all formulas in his head, instead he should be able of finding them out on good references and really know how to use
them all. This is the best reference book you are going to find when formulas is your subject, just buy it!
The only book I know better than this one is written in German and few people are able to read in German, so!

Best overview of persuasion and influence for the seriously curious

I 've been studying social psychology for years and I've remained fascinated by it since college, and have read dozens of texts on the subject. I bought this text because I like Zimbardo's clear informal style of writing and I suspected this might be a good reference book to give to my son who is studying psychology. I was surprised that when I received the book and started reading it, I found it so outstanding and I bought another copy just for myself.

The thing that makes this book so outstanding to me is that it doesn't just list the principles or theories of influence, it actually organizes them into something I didn't even realize existed: a single relatively coherent framwork for persuasion and social influence. The authors choose several particularly comprehensive and robust models such as the "Theory of Reasoned Action" and the "Attitude Systems" model to help organize their book into a systematic explanation of how and why influence works. The result is that they manage to tie together a vast diversity of theories into a reasonable framework for study.

The book starts off making the critical distinction between attitudes, behaviors, thoughts, emotional evaluations, and intentions, and introduces the crucial concept that these are all linked together in various ways. The resulting general model is an enormous help in understanding the various many experimental results and theories that the authors introduce in later chapters.

Second, after introducing the general model, the book begins with how behavior changes from situational forces independently of attitudes or beliefs. We learn about the classic experiments in obedience to authority, conformity with groups, reciprocity, and committment; the various click-whirr responses we use to help guide our behavior without thinking.

Third. the book begins to apply the general model, we first see how our observation of our behavior feeds back to our own thinking and attitudes.

Fourth we enter the grander realm of persuasion: we learn the conditions under which we tend to think about the situation rather than just responding with behavior. We learn how our thinking is guided by both internal and situational factors, and the patterns by which it organizes itself to maintain consistency, and to help us achieve our goals.

Fifth, we begin to see the conditions under which the various shifts we have been seeing in people sometimes become more lasting, and when they are actually manifested in later behaviors. Yet again, we see how the general model introduced at the beginning of the book helps to understand the diverse theories in the book. This is not a small accomplishment in my opinion.

What creates resistance to influence, and what makes for exceptional vulnerability to influence? The Sixth major topic covers the fascinating question of why our attitudes and values form a stable system for thinking and why and how it can shift sometimes.

Seventh, there are various applications of the previous ideas, investigating such questions as "unconscious" or "subliminal" influence, how well it works and for what purposes, and how it relates to the cognitive model. We also look at the important application of these ideas to juries and courtrooms.

The book ends appropriately with the application of its ideas to health, survival, thriving, and happiness. This isn't "positive psychology" per se, rather it is an exploration of how the concepts of persuasion and influence detailed previously in the book might relate more directly to physical and mental health through attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

This is a very focused book and probably the best overview I've come across on the social psychological and social-cognitive theories of influence and persuasion (both self and other influence and persuasion) especially if you want to understand the theories and how they relate to each other.

There are other books more focused on applying the theories for those who just want strategies to improve their influence skills, but I have not found another book with a better educational discussion of the ideas.

This is my favorite book on persuasion and influence for the seriously curious.

So much fluff. I'm not a fan of the textbook industry in general with the constantly "updated" new editions that force poor students to fork over cash while getting little actual value. Related do this, I find it hypocritical that this book has a chapter on business ethics, yet it is in its 11th edition! How ethical is that?

I find it interesting that the professors write an entire chapter on entrepreneurship and seem to give great advice for the aspiring entrepreneur for how its done, yet these professors have never actually been entrepreneurs themselves. Anyone could write the advice they give: have a business plan! (duh), work hard (duh), it might not be as easy as you think (again duh). Yet they someone seems to fill an entire 30 page chapter with this obvious advice.

There is a lot of writing about things I don't think they actually understand. At one point, its mentioned that when you buy stock, you're giving the company money that they can invest in their business. This is not how the stock market works...when you buy stock you are buy from another trader, the company gets none of your money. Only at the initial public offering (IPO) does a company get money from the public, after that, their stock trades on the secondary market. This is the reason why if companies need more money, they will issue more shares of stock. Just one example of the authors writing about things they don't truly know about, but do because they felt compelled to fill a massive 800 page tome with all kinds of similar crap.

Overall, the book's main points could be condensed down to a 30 page pamphlet, and that would have provided the average student with something way more useful. Unfortunately I think most people will be forced to buy this book for a class, but if you're able, please pass. Or see if you can get through the class will a cheaper, used, earlier edition. I sincerely doubt there is a big difference between the 1st and 11th edition of this book.

Needlessly long, great text book to fall asleep to - but good content still

The book has excellent content, but has more examples than anything. It could easily have said everything it did in less than half the space. Feels very fluffed up with work count to meet publisher needs rather than with actual useful information. If you need this for a class, well, you're stuck with it, but if you don't need it, don't buy it - all the information is easily found online in much easier to digest formats.
