I bought this book as a replacement for the same book which I bought at a Radio Shack over 30 years ago. To this day, this book remains one of the best books on the subject since it presents all of the basic design principals in an easy to read fashion which is easily comprehended by the layman. No rocket science is required to understand this book, thanks to the author's very good writing skills! Even Gilligan of Gilligan's Island could build a decent sounding set of stereo speakers after reading this book.

Good Book. Some of the theory is over my head, I need to do some reading to get up to speed.

It helps me get started and i like the example projects. I am not good with mathematics. I start to lose the idea with formulas.
I would like to get a better understanding of the reasons behind the styles and methods to decide the best approach.
Equations don't help me much to understand (not good with math). This book may be more helpful to me after reading more
on the concepts of the different design choices. Seems there are so many variables to choosing the right design approach.

Still the Best Speaker Book for the Money!

I'm a big Weems fan! I bought the 1st edition ~25 years ago. I used the first edition to build dozens of Hi-Fi, Pro-Audio and Car loudspeaker systems. With my first edition getting pretty worn with use, so I recently purchased the 4th edition, and I am very pleased. There are other books, but Weems book is stell the best speaker book for the money!

The 4th edition has been edited to the fundamental information required to design loudspeakers. In addition, Mr. Weems added design information on 3rd and 4th order cross over networks and added the governing equations to determine fb, f3 and Vb for closed and vented boxes. The BASIC source code for programs to design speaker and cross overs is also provided. Yea, the BASIC code is a little dated since most operating systems don't have a BASIC interpreter these days. I would like to see the programs downloadable (preferably in VB), but I have used the source code and the equations to write make my own VB application.

Weems provides both exact solutions (for math lovers), and the "minimal math" approach as well. Either way, you need to do "some" math to correctly design a loudspeaker enclosure. Most folks, who have mastered high school algebra and can solve simple equations, should be able to use the charts and graphs and design boxes and cross over networks.

I recommend this book for everyone from pro's to beginners. For the Physicists and Engineers out there, you may be a little disappointed that the derivation of the solutions are not presented. For beginners, if the design task seems overwhelming, this book will provide a great foundation to buy a kit from one of the online retailers. Either way, if I had to choose one speaker building book, this would be the one.

It is a how-to, with diagrams on street and courtyard siting, but it is also a history of urban-design theory, including seminal texts ranging from passages of Camillo Sitte's 1889 book The Art of Building Cities to Kevin Lynch's 1960 essay "The City Image and Its Elements."

Chapters are dedicated to sustainable design, universal design, transit-centered urban villages, wayfinding, and "traffic calming." Almost every essay is written by a different expert, which affords a diversity of experience and voice, and the tome liberally uses photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts with informative statistics and demographics. It may offer more than you want to know, but after a selective read, it should be parked on your shelf as an invaluable reference.

Judging by its title, you might think "Time-Saver Standards for Urban Design" would be a source mainly for street widths, sidewalk dimensions, parking ratios, and other matters than can largely be reduced to mathematical calculations. But this six-pound tome with its 960 oversized pages has far broader ambitions. McGraw-Hill calls this volume, "the definitive reference on urban design," and the description doesn't seem to be hyperbole.

Donald Watson, former dean of the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with help from Alan Plattus of Yale School of Architecture and Robert Shibley of SUNY-Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning, has assembled a volume containing the most significant urban design writings of the past 106 years. And that's just one of the eight sections in this enormous compilation. In addition to twelve classic texts...readers will find dozens of authoritative recent writings on world urbanization, regionalism, neighborhood planning, bikeways, greenways, universal design, outdoor lighting, way finding, acoustic considerations, and seemingly every other aspect of city-shaping.

He is editor-in-chief of Time-Saver Standards for Architectural Design Data (7th edition, 1997) and Time-Saver Standards for Building Materials and Systems (2000).

ALAN PLATTUS is Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at Yale University School of Architecture. He founded and directs the Yale Urban Design Workshop, a community design center that has worked with cities, towns and neighborhoods throughout the region. He also directs the Yale China Studio, working with universities in China on urban design issues in rapidly developing cities. He has published widely on the history and theory of architecture and urbanism, and edited the new edition of Hegemann and Peets classic text, The American Vitruvius.

ROBERT G. SHIBLEY, AIA, AICP, is a professor of architecture and planning at the School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo, State University of New York. He is the Director of the Urban Design Project, a center for the study and practice of urban design. One of the best I've read

I am not a CPA or Finance major. I am a physicist so the math is not intimidating. I have been investing as an amateur since retirement and this book gives solid and easily understood ways to get at the valuation of a company and its stock by investigating the financial statements. There is a good comprehensive case study at the end of the book, but I wish the authors would give more examples either within or at the end of each chapter.

I have bought every edition of this book, and it just keeps getting better and better. As a 25 year veteran of corporate finance, I continue to use this book myself on a regular basis and to recommend it to less experienced employees who are still developing their expertise. Every finance library should have this book.

Great for students!

I purchased this book to assist me with some finance and accounting courses. It was one of the best purchases I could have made. The book is clear, concise, and informative. It made understanding several of the concepts behind financial statement analysis much much simpler. It is certainly worth every bit of the cost.

Remembered with reverence

I stumbled onto this discussion by accident, and then remembered that Rudin's book had been my Analysis text very many years ago, in a two-semester upper division course, for undergrad math majors. Personally, I've long since left behind the formal pursuit of math, but keep a fond appreciation for those years of study.
I recall that at the beginning of my Analysis course I hated Rudin's book, and then after a few weeks found that I was beginning to tolerate it, even appreciate it. By the end of the course, under the tutelage of my wily professor, I came to regard the book and its author with near veneration. I still remember being forced to work through the problem sets, grumbling at the beginning, and then achieving that sense of exhilaration one feels when a dimly understood idea suddenly becomes blazingly clear, and another tantalizing idea is close behind.
Perhaps such experiences, which are both intellectual and emotional, are part of the "maturity" that seasoned mathematicians try to cultivate in their students. In any case, I'm convinced that Rudin's book, at least in the hands of a skillful teacher, can help bring a dutiful student to mathematical maturity.
After all this reminiscing, I'm going to dig out a copy, and see if I can recapture some of those memorable moments of discovery.

Like drinking math out of a fire hose

'Baby Rudin' is an introductory text in analysis for the serious student of mathematics. This was the text used for the first semester of Harvard's freshman real analysis course (Math 25a, modestly titled "Honors Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra") back in 2004. A majority of student in the course had been exposed to proof writing, through high school olympiads, upper division university mathematics, or both. Although the professor (Tom Coates, now of Imperial College London) was an excellent lecturer and was very helpful and patient, students lacking this sort of background ("mathematical maturity") had substantial difficulty keeping up with the course. Those of us who remained in the course after the first few weeks found ourselves spending 15 to 20 hours a week working problems assigned from Rudin (which range from routine verifications to problems barely within the grasp of the most talented student in the class) and additional problems supplemented by the instructor.

As many previous reviewers have already noted, "Principles of Mathematical Analysis" (PMA) is simply the best out there in terms of clear, concise mathematical exposition of one-variable advanced calculus (Chapters 1-8). While the entire book is succinct and fantastically organized, chapter 2 on metric space topology deserves particular mention. This concisely written chapter (23 pages) is strategically placed to serve as a cornerstone for the rest of the book. Assuming only rudimentary familiarity with set and functions, Rudin includes only what is needed: just a taste of topology to enable the subsequent discussions of continuity and convergence in a general and abstract setting. Several interesting ideas not included in the text of chapter 2 (like the Baire category theorem) are included in the exercises. Though the abstraction is challenging for the beginner, the reward is substantial, enabling celebrated theorems (e.g., Arzelà-Ascoli, Stone-Weierstrass) to be proved cleanly and quickly later on. The usual topics (limits, continuity, differentiation, and Riemann(-Stieltjes) integration) are covered in the subsequent chapters 3-7, followed by a discussion on power series at the beginning of chapter 8. A discussion of the rigorous definitions of special functions (exp, log, sin, cos, Gamma), the fruits of one's labors, nicely rounds out a comprehensive one-semester course in real analysis. (Back then, our course covered chapters 1-7, and a few sections of chapter 8. It ended up being the course with the biggest workload for me that semester, by far!)

Rudin covers analysis on several variables (incl. differential forms and the generalized Stokes Theorem) and Lebesgue measure and integration in the three remaining chapters. These chapters have been the subject of criticism, mostly due to the bare bones coverage of these intricate topics. In my opinion, they really are too lean to be pedagogically useful introductions. However, they are useful as "cliff notes" after already learning them. Rudin's outlines of these topics do not provide the reader with all of their formalisms and machinery or their many implications, so one is well-advised to find other resources for an introduction to these topics. For multivariable calculus, Spivak’s "Calculus on Manifolds" is flawed but still the best out there, though it should be supplemented by Halmos’s "Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces" or Axler’s "Linear Algebra Done Right" to provide the requisite abstract linear and multilinear algebra background. Bartle’s "Elements of Integration and Lebesgue Measure" provides a clear though not particularly thorough introduction to Lebesgue theory.

With the exception of a short introductory paragraph at the beginning of each chapter, the book consists almost entirely of a series of statements labeled Definition, Theorem, or Corollary (in that order) with only an occasional Example or Remark squeezed in. (The Examples and Remarks are extremely important -- they generally address subtleties or common points of confusion for the beginner.) This format may be shocking or frustrating for some. However, the beauty of the mathematics is allowed to speak for itself through Rudin's austere exposition. Flipping through my tattered copy of the book from 2004, I still marvel at the elegance and polish of the proofs -- completely rigorous, yet without a wasted symbol or syllable. Precisely for these reasons, however, students will find themselves reading and re-reading a proof to try to figure out how Rudin managed to construct it and/or where the idea behind it came from. To get the most out of PMA, the diligent student should have pencil and paper in hand to try to write their own less elegant but plainly motivated proofs, preferably before even looking at Rudin's proof. Also, Rudin only occasionally remarks upon why the hypotheses of a theorem cannot be weakened. Thus, to fully understand a theorem, the diligent student should frequently think about constructing concrete examples or counterexamples.

A professor teaching from this text should ideally motivate the definitions (and even some of the theorems) presented in PMA during lectures. (It's not always clear why he proves something; Rudin does not distinguish between main theorems and lemmas.) However, if you are teaching yourself, a less formal exposition with more examples and explanations with occasional diagrams to facilitate intuition will probably be useful. Pugh’s "Real Mathematical Analysis," comes to mind. (It covers more topics than PMA, but adopts a conversational tone throughout. In addition, the exceptionally interesting and difficult exercises in Pugh’s text are an added bonus!)

A final remark about the style: if PMA sometimes reads like a collection of lecture notes, it's probably because it started out that way. It originated when Rudin, a freshly minted Ph.D., started teaching real analysis as a lecturer at MIT in 1950. Back then, there were very few analysis textbooks in English. Texts like Hardy's venerable "A Course of Pure Mathematics" and Titchmarsh's advanced text "The Theory of Functions" present a classical view of the subject without reference to topological notions. There were no suitable modern treatments of real analysis at the time, so he decided to write one for his course. The first edition of PMA was published only three years later in 1953. To varying extents, PMA inspired the treatment of modern ideas in almost all subsequent English language textbooks in analysis.

About the Author

As an avid 13-year-old sailor, Chris White became interested in multihulls after a day sail on a charter trimaran in St. Croix. Five years later, he built and launched the 31-foot Searunner trimaran Shadowfax, which became home and adventure vehicle for three years of cruising the East Coast, the Bahamas, the West Indies, and parts of South America.

Returning to the U.S. with firm ideas for designing serious cruising multihulls, White worked with multihull pioneer Jim Brown to develop Constant Camber boatbuilding, culminating in the construction of the 52-foot trimaran Juniper.

After two years of cruising Juniper from Maine to the West Indies with his wife, Kate, White devoted himself full-time to furthering development of cruising multihulls. He is an associate member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, has published numerous articles in boating magazines, and holds several patents for inventions pertaining to high-speed recreational sailboats.

When he can get away from his busy design business in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Chris, Kate, and young sons Bill and Robert still sail Juniper at every opportunity. In WoodenBoat magazine, Jim Brown called White one of the " . . . few designers . . . offering extremely wholesome new cruising designs for the amateur. To me, such men appear to tiptoe down the tightrope of compromise between cruising and performance."

A well-written book but not a one-stop shop

I bought this book as I am considering switching from a monohull to a multihull and I wanted to learn a little more about the differences between the boats. This book was well-written - the author's style is easy to read, clear and concise. However it didn't entirely scratch where I itched.

The author covers a good deal of ground in his book and I particularly liked his comparisons between the safety records of monohulls and multihulls. In many cases there aren't accurate figures but he worked with what was available to show that multihulls are no more dangerous than monohulls - in fact the reverse. And with the major danger that exists - capsize - he devotes a large amount of space to how to prepare for capsize, how to deal with it etc. This was a helpful, if slightly daunting, section with a lot of common sense. Yes, multihulls capsize but they don't sink and you can survive in one for quite a while if well prepared. And they don't capsize THAT often.

He also gave a significant amount of space to multihull designs, although again I think some of this information was a little out of date (an expected problem with an older book). The author definitely has his own opinions about what's good and what isn't and he speaks from the position of someone who likes to sail fast rather than potter about on a cruise (although a lot of other multihull owners, I imagine, prefer the relaxed cruising). He has designed a couple of boats himself and I found myself rather irritated at how often he showed us examples of his boats as proof of various statements about design - I felt he sometimes had a rather one-track mind about boat building.

My disappointment with this book, and the reason that I've only awarded it 4 stars rather than 5, is that he doesn't say a great deal about the handling differences between multihulls and monohulls and how they behave differently for passengers. A section on marina handling techniques, for example, would have been very useful as there are very different skills required here. Equally I didn't find anything that told me about the different methods one might use under sail to make the most of the multihulls' strengths - apart from speed, which he wrote about a lot (the use of drogues and parachute anchors to slow you down, for example). It was a good read and covered a fair bit of ground (including techniques to build your own boat - I wasn't too sure of the value of this information for your average reader) but it didn't answer all the questions I had so I will have to research a little further.

About the Author
C. Arthur Williams, Jr. (PhD, Graduate School of Business, Columbia University) is a professor emeritus of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. While at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Williams held the Minnesota Industry Chair in Insurance; since his retirement, this chair has been renamed the C. Arthur Williams Insurance Industry Chair. Dr. Williams is widely acclaimed as one of the leading scholars in the field of risk management and insurance. Over his 45 years of academic service, he produced well over 100 publications, including textbooks, technical articles, treatises, and research studies. He was especially productive in the field of workers' compensation, and his 1991 publication An International Comparison of Workers' Compensation earned the 1993 Elizur Wright Award.
